Review: Atlas - A Sci-Fi Misfire
Atlas Review
Introduction
The last Jennifer Lopez action movie I saw wasn't too
great, but I was curious to check her out in the new Netflix Sci-Fi Atlas. With
a ton of shootouts and explosions, the question remains: can the story hold
your attention?
Atlas Trailer
Plot Overview
Atlas follows Atlas Shepard, a brilliant but
misanthropic data analyst with a deep distrust of artificial intelligence. She
joins a mission to capture a renegade robot with whom she shares a mysterious
past. When plans go awry, her only hope of saving humanity from AI is to trust
it.
Plot Analysis
The movie starts with a large exposition dump about a
past AI uprising led by a humanoid AI named Harlen. After Harlen threatens
Earth with annihilation, the story jumps 30 years into the future, where Atlas
joins a mission to capture him.
Acting and Characters
Jennifer Lopez plays Atlas Shepard as a woman who's
grown up with AI, making her character naturally distrustful and standoffish.
However, this makes it challenging to warm up to her character, especially with
the lack of development outside the initial narrative.
Supporting Cast
Mark Strong and Sterling K. Brown also star in Atlas.
However, more introductory time with each of them, along with interactions with
Atlas, could have added depth to their characters and relationships.
AI Dynamics
The banter between Atlas and her AI counterpart, voiced
by Gregory James Cohen, is reminiscent of Interstellar. However, the AI's
delivery is a bit stiff, emphasizing its robotic nature over a human presence.
Villain and Conflict
While Simu Liu plays Harlen, the main antagonist, he's
not in the movie as much as expected. His character lacks depth, making it
challenging to create any emotional response toward him.
Visuals and Effects
The movie heavily relies on CGI, which is a mixed bag.
While some visuals are convincing, others resemble video game cutscenes,
breaking the immersion at times.
Conclusion
Atlas introduces an intriguing concept but falls short
due to the lack of meaningful character development and world-building. The
graphics are inconsistent, and while there are some enjoyable moments, the
overall experience is forgettable.
Summery
Atlas is a Netflix Sci-Fi film starring Jennifer Lopez as Atlas Shepard, a data analyst with a deep distrust of artificial intelligence (AI). The story is set in a future where AI has caused chaos, and Atlas joins a mission to capture a renegade AI named Harlen. The movie starts with a large exposition dump about the AI uprising led by Harlen, then jumps 30 years into the future, where Atlas and her team face challenges on their mission. Lopez portrays Atlas as a standoffish character, making it challenging to connect with her. Despite some engaging action scenes and humor, the film's characters lack depth, particularly Harlen, who feels like a generic villain. The CGI is a mix of convincing and unconvincing visuals, with some scenes resembling video game cutscenes. Overall, Atlas introduces an intriguing concept but fails to deliver a memorable experience due to its shallow characterizations and inconsistent visuals. It's a fun watch for casual viewing but lacks the depth needed for lasting impact.
