Rebel Ridge Review 2024

Introduction

Hey everyone, today we’re diving into the newest small-town action thriller on Netflix, Rebel Ridge. If you're familiar with the trope of a military veteran, the size of an NFL linebacker, wandering into a small town, you'll understand why making his life harder isn't a great idea. But that's exactly what the local police do in this film, and it sets the stage for an intense and entertaining ride.

Rebel Ridge Trailer

A Brief Overview

In Rebel Ridge, we follow a former Marine who confronts corruption in a small town after local law enforcement unjustly seizes the bag of cash he needs to post his cousin's bail. This premise had me excited from the get-go, especially with Jeremy Saulnier at the helm. Known for his ability to craft a slow burn and ramp up the intensity, Saulnier's previous work, like Green Room, is a testament to his skill in keeping audiences on edge.

Strong Performances Drive the Film

One of the film’s strongest aspects is its performances. Aaron Pierre, whom I only previously knew from M. Night Shyamalan's Old (where he played a character with the less-than-impressive name of Midsize Sedan), truly shines here. His portrayal of a character who is both physically imposing and intellectually sharp is impressive and adds depth to the film.

Don Johnson, playing the main antagonist, delivers a compelling performance as the small-town power player resistant to change. The dynamic between Pierre and Johnson creates a captivating back-and-forth that keeps the tension high and the audience engaged. Their confrontations are some of the most entertaining parts of the film.

Action Sequences: Less Is More

When it comes to action, Rebel Ridge takes a more measured approach compared to relentless, high-octane entries like John Wick. The action scenes are well-constructed, realistic, and satisfyingly intense without overwhelming the viewer. The film gradually increases the stakes and intensity, which mirrors the escalating conflict in the plot.

Narrative Complexity

However, the film isn't without its flaws. While the first hour and final 30 minutes are engaging and effective, the middle portion of the film becomes bogged down in a convoluted narrative. The movie attempts to connect the central conflict to a larger political conspiracy, which feels unnecessary and detracts from the immediate, compelling story of revenge and justice.

Overall Impressions

Despite its narrative missteps, Rebel Ridge remains a slick, well-acted, and entertaining action thriller. It features strong performances, good cinematography, and memorable fight sequences. If you’re a fan of the one-man army type of action films, this movie will likely appeal to you.

Final Rating

Rebel Ridge earns a Sully score of three and a half stars. It’s a film that provides plenty of thrills and showcases a promising new talent in Aaron Pierre. If you’re looking for more action films to add to your watchlist, let me know some of your underrated favorites in the comments

Rebel Ridge, the latest Netflix action thriller, follows a former Marine confronting small-town corruption after local law enforcement seizes cash meant for his cousin’s bail.
